Right, I will try this again - wrote up a post yesterday but the system logged me out and lost it. Normally I copy it to the clipboard before pressing the post button just in case but I was in a rush.......thinking

John - doesn't really show in the photos but the green was more yellow. It looked fine under the light I was working below but daylight showed the real colour - yuck

Steve - definitely using the old pencil trick. Normally a 2B

Si - cheers

Ross - see above. I managed to remove most of the dodgy colour with x20 as it was water based oil paint

Peter - thanks. Bit of a steep learning curve but sort of getting there

Jim - Ta. Yes the x20 thinner did seem to stick the pigment down. Had to give it a good scrub to remove the excess black anyway

These are the photos from yesterday

exhaust staining

tracks after scribbling on them with the pencil

it hasn't come out very well but I have also used it on the running face of the track and the metal wheel rims

Now for the fun and messy part of the snow trials - snow

krycell snow and ice wash applied to the horizontal surfaces of the turret (also the hull)

this seems to be a fine powder in suspension. The powder gathers in the corners

unlike paint the effect can be scrubbed off with a stiff brush if not quite as intended

krycell extra snow test on the tracks

more snow over the mud - may scrub a bit of this off as a bit heavy

this is a combination of the snow/ice wash and snow powder (fixed with brush painted hairspray) to build up deposits in the corners

not obvious in the photos but the snow powder has sparkles in it

Thanks for looking in

Hi Simon

That is looking very good indeed. I reckon you are right about the wash being a suspension of their snow powder in something. Not sure what the liquid fixer is but the smell gives nothing away to me.

AndyB - cheers (hope you're getting sorted after the soggy disaster)

Jim - have found you can add powder to the wash to get a more lumpy effect

have managed a few more small bits - now got snow on both track units and have been building it up on the hull top and turret roof

not sure whether it looks snowy or the victim of an explosion in an icing sugar factory

Just got back from Buffalo, NY. Looks like snow to me. It still amazes me how they get 6 to 8" overnight and the roads are clear before noon. PaulE

I like it sir Snow so far looks very effective thumbs up. I have a couple of different Snow washes, but have been reluctant to use them , as it puzzles me how they can look like Snow thinking.
