For Elizabethan period interest, try wolfeton or athelhampton houses? Same county, relatively close as well.

Another possible on your list for the family to visit - Kingston Lacy House
Reasonably close to Bovington. I pass it on my way there.
You are going to need transport, a hire car I'm guessing.

Don't know if anyone's mentioned Portsmouth Historic Dockyard?
(sorry, I'm too idle to read all the posts)
HMS Warrior (my favourite)
A full day out. Fantastic place.

You've certainly getting some ideas, Dave's post about the historic dockyard is a good one and there are boat trips around the harbour showing any Royal Navy ships in the harbour and you can get off at the submarine museum which is very good it has a submarine you can tour. Winchester is just up the road with it's cathedral and Historic close, you also have the Peninsula square military museums the largest of which is the Royal Grreejackets, further North near Newbury is Highclere Castle where the TV series Downton Abbey was filmed. Then west to Middle Wallop is the museum of Army flying and then if you carry on West is Stonehenge.
just a few more ideas for you to think about regards Jim

Yes! Jim is absolutely right.
Visit the sub. museum (how on earth did I forget that?)
Really, really good.
And thanks for the other suggestions, Jim. We're planning another annual history & beer trip down that way next autumn.
