Having a chat with the sculptor behind Alpines WSS Grenadier Wiking,so masterly painted by Gino Poppe.

Mr.Pongsatorn Kanthaboon
Born: Nakhonsawan province,Thailand,1980

Alpine has just released the Waffen-ss grenadier figure you sculpted, when did you start modelling?

-When I was 5 years old. After reading japanese cartoons. My first model was Japanese Infantry 1/35 by Tamiya.I really loved the figures that time. But after 3-4 model kits I had to stop doing it because my family couldn`t support the expensive hobby. In 1994 I was 14 years old and I tried to sculpt for myself,my first project was a 1/10 Velociraptor Skelton sculpt made with white clay.A year or so later I entered a competition, the "Take Off Model Award" in Bangkok, and I got the silver award in the "conversions Figure Model 1/35" class. In 1996 I started writing for a model magazine in Thailand, the "Hobby Model".I did this for a few years.I quit this job and entered "The Modellers Contest 1999" competition. Here I won 3 awards. But then I went to study art in Chiang Mai,and I had to concentrate on school work and art projects.Last year of study I had more time so the miniature project could be resumed. That project started with this 120 mm Mujahideen figure.

At first I hoped that I could produce this figure myself. But unlucky...I had a bad friend and ended up with some counterfeit kit. After that event I did more projects to present myself as a sculptor.Soon a company was interested in my work,Think One Eighty Studio, not long after a second and third company contacted me,La Meridiana Miniature and Alpine Miniatures. So I think that now I have a great opportunity to become a full-time sculptor.

Any future goals beside becoming a full time sculptor?

Yes,I would like to go to an International competition, such as the Euro Militare, and to have my own figure factory:)

What is your inspiration?

When I was young my favorite sculptor was Mr.Mike Good,he inspires me.Other inspiration comes from books, history, movies and my self-desire to see the figure of my dream.

Do you have any favorite modelling tools?

Sure,it is something simple as some pins, art knife and a rotary tool.

Any advice on what not to do when modelling?

-You can`t sculpt anything good if you do it without your heart.

And last,is there any special era, person etc. you would like to sculpt?

A thai warrior!!I love the history of Thailand!

We thank you for your time, and wish you luck!We look forward to see more of your work:)

Thanks for this Yngve. As someone interested in sculpting myself, I find this interesting... myself...?!
Seriously though he has produced some nice works in various chapters of history.
Cheers
