I bought this way back when it was first released and painted it , quite badly.

I saw it the other day lurking at the back of the shelf and decided to have another go. So it was out with the Fairy Power spray again to strip it back to bare resin.

Due presumably to moulding constraints the cap badges are curved round the beret so I made a quick silicone mould of them and then carved them off.

I have trimmed down the moustache and rescored the hair

Due to the large size of the bust the beret and jumper look very smooth so I stippled them with Squadron green stuff - this will then be toned down with scouring pad once set

I have also modified the neck aperture slightly so that the head can be turned marginally off centre

Hi all - it is a very good likeness to the man, however, given my lack of figure painting ability it may look like Rommel by the time I have finished

Hi Simon

This is an extremeley nice bust, and as you say a very good likeness.
I painted one for my Father, as he was a Derert Rat and served with Monty.

Look forward to following this.

I like the texture idea,

Because of the size will you be spraying it or brush painting it?

Malc - having just read your Lucky Jack article there is no way that I can even come close so don't hold your breath

Dick - it is listed as 1:4 but i think they may have exaggerated a bit unless he had a very small head ! The head is about 50mm and about the same for the shoulders.

Ian - it just looked too smooth given the size so i am hoping the bit of texture will help liven it up a bit.. I am going to attempt to airbrush as much as possible - got one of those £18 iwata clones on ebay to try with the vallejo (after ruining the nozzles on my very expensive Aztec with the stuff) as they can be fully disassembled. I now have some vallejo retarder as well to try and slow down the drying times and give it a chance to actually come out of the AB before it sets!!

It will get a primer of vallejo white then a base of Tamiya - I have found that the vallejo is rubbish as a base as it starts to lift after a bit of working, esp with oils
