hello everyone,
here's my Flak 88/36 diorama with AFV Club's Leichte Zugkfraftwagen Sd.Kfz.11 Late Version, Lion Roar's KS750 with Sidecar and many figures from Warriors, Wolf, Alpine and Dragon. I have dabbled with snow before but this time i went all out and tried different was of applying it. also, i finished the Flak's snow camouflage using the hairspray technique which was my first attempt. i also tried Mig's Pigments on the Sd.Kfz.11 for my first time, using it different ways to see how it works.

i used Mig's Pigments over a colour modulated dark yellow base. i first painted the model nato black and then airbrushed the center of each panel with increasing lighter shades of dark yellow. i then applied a matt laquer finish and applied Mig Light Dust dry on horizontal surfaces and wet on vertical surfaces. i also had a go at adding paint chipping, something i see most people are doing nowadays.

Lion Roar's little kit was full of nice detail but i added throttle and gas lines and stocked the trailer with goodies. Lion Roar makes a nice kit but i have to wonder about some of the locations of the injection points. it made for some difficult cleanup.

Dragon's Premium Model of the Flak 88/36 with metal barrel and photo etched parts was a dream. went together like every kit should. i base painted it panzer grey and then used silly putty for masking. i then used regular hold hairspray on the each of the three pieces one at a time. i found that letting it only set for 10 minutes rather than 15 or more was just right. i then airbrushed white acrylic, waited 10 minutes and began rub the parts gently with a spare paintbrush. this technique has so many possibilities.

some of the figures i finished for this project. if you count the fellow carrying the wounded soldier as two there are a total of 17 figures. i had never made a diorama bustling with people. i bought most of them when Squadron was having a big sale, some were had for as little as $3.99 each. Alpine were the best in my opinion for style, detail and casting.

when i start mocking up the scene, within a frame i made from MDF moulding painted black, i try to get a nice balance. i always need everything built before i can size and compose the overall diorama.

the groundwork was made from Woodland Scenics Mold-A-Scene Plaster mixed with sand i got from my neighbour's english riding arena. i like to make my dioramas with varying heights within the setting for a more interesting look.

i placed the figures around the scene temporarily to see how it will all work. i glued the bushes with white glue then started adding the snow, again using Woodland Scenic product. the best i found was to mix water with white glue in a very small container then add the snow to make a watery slurry. then applied it with a wooden sculpting tool.

I am having trouble getting the finished piece to photograph well. everything looks washed out and the winter uniforms look like their painted with watercolours. i will try again later to get some better pics.

hope you enjoy and happy modelling.

~That's a great impressive Dio going by the one completed shot, Hellhound, is it? In the one shot on top the scene looks very balanced and realistic-the snow very slushy & real, the '88 itself very well done (especially considering how many we see modelled--just ordered the AFV Flak 18 kit myself) I for one would love to see some more photos of this Dio-it looks quite good with that backdrop  The elements fit together excellently.
The only small aside I have(and I'm going out on a limb here-please try to see it as friendliness that I even bother to ask about it, and not something else) is asking us to call you by that name---where did that name come from if i might ask? I'm sure some here may find it a bit off-putting, as friendly a site as this is--most of us tend to go by our given names here.
Thanks,
             Adam

thanks adam for the nice reply and i will try to figure out what lighting would best help me with the photography of the final piece.

my nickname "hellhound" was from back in the day when my buddies and i needed callsigns for our pc flight sim dogfights. i got the reference from "the hounds of the baskervilles" by sir arthur conan doyle's sherlock holmes book.

many here have taken to calling me MH, which is lovely as well. the "meaty" part was added as i am not a small fellow in stature and it asked me for a first name when signing up. i am not accustomed to putting my real name online, i do not have a facebook/twitter/myspace/blog account, as i have a rather unique name and lead a reasonably private life.

so, here i am, i have been known online for close to a decade now as hellhound (i always type in lower case as well) and i have seen others posting here with pseudonyms so i thought it would not offend. perhaps i was in error.

~MH~ Not a problem--I'll call you MH then .  I would have have felt worse asking if 'hellhound' was an actual callsign you'd used in the service--but I'm a fan myself of the Holmes stories--
I do appreciate the explanation and for the record I prefer my name capitalized.

Very good dio MH, really like this one, just looks so natural and every thing works very well together, I always think if you can nail the figures you've cracked it and you have certainly nailed  these guys.

I look forward to seeing more of you work
