Hi Guys

Just picked up the old Tamiya Panzer 2 kit (the one that includes 5 figures as well) as something to build while I am awaiting my Tigers Etched set to arrive from hong kong.

I want to paint it in the colours used by the  Africakorps but the instructions are very vauge, so what are the best colours to use.

I did have a search and found this, does it sound right

In March of 1941, it ordered that vehicles in and destinedfor North Africa were to be painted in yellow brown/sand yellow (RAL 8000) as a base colour with grey green (RAL7008) for camouflage patterns. Yellow brown was to be used to cover 75% of the vehicle and grey green the rest

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul, check this RAL chart , then click on the colour you´re looking for , example for RAL 8000 ,then just click on "search similar colours" and you´ll have all the colours , enamels , acrylics .... I think it´s an interesting place.
Julio.

Hi Paul if your after a grey green RAL7009,i am working on getting it right with the help of Mike.

But i am a bit confused because you have it down as RAL7008 which according to the ral chart is  Khaki grey ?

You could of cause just go for panzer grey with a lot of dust as there's a lot of photo;s that show them in grey before they got painted and the the crews still in there panzer black uniforms.if like me you end up totally confused.

Hello Gentlemen,

The Bovington Tiger was restored to the original colours:
Just a word of caution about the RAL colour system. In 1953 the RAL range of colours was changed, have a look at David Byrden's Panzer Colours for more details.
I hope this helps

Regards
Mike

The second colour looks like a very pale green rather than the ple grey or brown I keep finding reference to, you sure they got it right at bovington, like they got the colour of their Matilda wrong, when they painted the pale blue stip instead of silver grey.

Thanks for the post.

Hi Paul,

You are quite right to be sceptical about museum camouflage schemes In addition there is a lot of confusion about DAK colours which the RAL change in 1953 compounded.
The Bovington Tiger was repainted in RAL 7008 (graugruen) and RAL8000 (gelbraun) on the advice of Thomas Jentz and Hilary Doyle using previously unrepainted areas of the vehicle as reference. Here's a link to the page in the restoration journal that discusses the current scheme.
Graugruen translates as Greygreen and Gelbraun, literally translates as yellowbrown or buff.
I hope this helps.

Regards
Mike
