9273 forum posts 726 photos | Hi Roger, welcome to Milmod by the way
![]() Stunning stuff. I've heard of a few people owning one of these kits, but you are certainly in a select club of those who have managed to finish it!
Great work in every sense, from the overall vision and composition to the details. Talking of which, the sheer scale of it belies the quality of the detail by the look of it (the figures are as impressive as the Dora!)
We need more pictures please, a LOT more |

143 forum posts 105 photos | Thanks for the kind comments. It's difficult to do full diorama photos as it is over 7 feet long and 4 feet wide. I think I would need a ladder to fit the whole thing on one photo. Still very much a work in progress. Some of the photos are a little old. For example the D311 locomotive markings are not correct for the time period. I accidentally did the decals for 1949 rather than the 1941-1942 version so these are in the process of being changed. The Steyr and L4500 railcars are the most recent additions. Still a great deal of work to do. I cringe when I think of how many hours over the years I have spent on it. I am not surprised that most of these kits are sitting in boxes. The size of the box alone is intimidating.Mine sat for 6 months before I decided to attempt to try it. 3,000 pieces, a few hundred decals, and boxes full of paint tins later it was finished. I couldn't stand the thought of perching it on the ridiculously out of scale straight tracks that come with the kit so I started creating what I imagined would be the kind of environment this monster would have existed in. Some is based on research and some of it is based on conjecture-basically what I would imagine they would have done to solve the problems this thing presented. For example I know from the research that broken rail ties were a constant, never ending issue when she was in action. On high trajectory shots the force of the recoil would shove the rail cars the Dora sat on directly downward multiplying its already enormous weight and destroying the rail ties. I have read that as few as 2 high trajectory shots would require that all of the rail ties beneath her would have to be replaced. I have never been able to discover how they replaced these rail ties so I have no idea if they really used the railtrucks in the picture but I imagine using something relatively fast and mobile such as these would be advantageous but who knows? So some is historically accurate and some is just me filling in the blanks. Thanks again for the kind comments. When you stare at something long enough you just see the mistakes and all the work that still needs to be done. Nice to know that maybe it isn't as far off as I imagined. If anyone is interested I can post pics as the diorama progresses.
