Heehee, well those of a nervous disposition turn away now......

Actually it isn't as bad as I expected

Looks even better after a quick short back and sides

It isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination but it is reasonably square and unwarped and should give me a good base to work on

This is what it now looks like with half a tube of purest green smeared all over it, inside and out

I have also made a start on the replacement trigger guard

This is a lamination of three pieces of 120thou card

The hole that appeared in the frame, at the top of the trigger position, when I removed the incorrect areas has been blanked off with another piece of card to give the lamination something to sit against

Once this has dried I will attempt to carve it to something more resembling the correct profile

After that and with the green sanded down I should finally have a basic frame that I can start to build back up

Correcting the trigger area will also have the knock on effect of making the trigger itself and its sliding mechanism incorrect.

The Detonics did away with the grip safety so I will need to try and modify the back of the frame to suit

There is still the magazine to tackle and the barrel needs shortening, changing to the correct diameter for a .45 and re-profiling to the correct tapered shape of that used on the Detonics

Still a lot to do........

ps just released the barrel from it's clamps after a week and it seems to have dried out reasonably straight thumbs up

You have GOT to show us that AK. Would have thought buying these old kits would be tricky now. Surely they come under VCR restrictions. Will have to get a pic of the ones I picked up years ago.

Hi Chris - they do still appear in ebay every now and then

The AK is buried literally under hundreds of other kits in the stash up in the loft and if the other LS kits are anything to go by it is probably none too accurate

Great work with the plasticard Simon. Always interesting to see how you go about resolving the issues. The trigger guard, I am assuming, will be drilled/sawn and sanded back to shape. Quite a feat of engineeringthumbs up. Quick question on sanding. What devious wee devices do you use to sand back in the real awkward places? and can I make my own?

Hi Simon

What was it Del said in Only Fools and Horses "He who dares - wins!" Well looks like you dared and won. I am so glad that things seem to be coming out unwarped because that is something that must be very hard to deal with. I'll be very interested in how that trigger guard progresses.

Great work and entertaining as always.

Pete - said trigger guard has now been sanded and carved back to shape. Nothing devious involved though just a sanding drum in a Dremel and a knife

I have made custom sanding sticks from plastic card as you can cut it to any shape and then just superglue some wet and dry to it

Jim - the basic guard is now done and covered in green again

Terry - hello fellow green stuff devotee, thanks for dropping by thumbs up

started off by roughing out the shape on the plastic card

I then used a sanding drum in the Dremel phaser to remove most of the excess material and get some nice smooth curves

The whole thing was then blathered in green stuff again and left to dry for a couple of hours or so

and this is the result after a lot of sanding down and tweaking

When checking the trigger guard I found that I had been a bit enthusiastic when sanding the front edge of the frame square and it was now too short

A couple of scraps of plastic card were glued in place and clamped - should solve that problem

As if i didn't have enough problems to over come I am now making my own dont know

The barrel, apart from being over long, now doesn't fit due to correcting the trigger area shape and reducing the internal frame space - back to the references. I have a picture of a stripped gun somewhere that should help
