113 forum posts 1 photos | Tim, I think it was to be the 75 mm Kw.K.44/1 L/70. There were plans to introduce the Tiger B's main gun, the long barrel 88 as well. But I don't think it would fit in the schmalturm created for the panther. They would probably have to adapt the Tiger B's turret to the Panther. If memory serves, it was determined that the 88 could not be fitted to the panther because the turret ring was too small. I think the barrel on the KwK 42 and the KwK 44/1 are the same length. But the 42 has the brake on it. I think both are 70 calibers long. Also, I think one got built and is on display somewhere. I can't recall if it is at Bovington or perhaps Aberdeen in Maryland. I have some pictures of it in dunkelgelb only. No camo. I suppose that's because it was never fielded in battle. Cheers, Bruce P.S. I may turn out to be more ignorant than you, lol. I'm not certain of the above. My memory is going. 0_o

Moderator 8046 forum posts 6827 photos 12 articles | Thanks for the comments lads, Tim, Bruce has covered most of it (cheers Bruce). Plans to update the original Panther design with the Panther II were already being discussed before the first Panther had even seen combat! The development of the Panther II was being discussed as early as January 1943 when Hitler was insisting on heavier armour for the tank fleet. One Panther II chassis was completed and eventually captured by the U.S.; it is now on display at the Patton Museum in Fort Knox. An Ausf G turret is mounted on this chassis.(Picture courtesy Wikipedia - for discussion purposes only) The picture does lose its distortion once clicked on. Nick, I had a similar idea for an evolution project but focusing on Soviet/Russian AFVs. It is sort of happening but many other great models continue to be released so staying focused hasn't been an easy thing to do. This is the third Panther I've done. Craig glad to see you looking in & thanks for the kind words. It is great to be building again. Thanks Johnny good to see you along too.

Moderator 8046 forum posts 6827 photos 12 articles | Cheers Ross & Pete, On a bit of a roll with this. I've got the brown masked and sprayed. Although I am not totally happy with the finish on this so far there is still quite a way to go and the weathering should sort it out.
More tomorrow.
