Winter Grenadiers – Wiking Division Eastern Front 1943-45 Ref. # 6372 Scale: 1/35th Manufacturer: Dragon Price: Unknown Material: Styrene, PE
Dragon continue to roll out their second generation figure releases with this set of four figures, dresses appropriately for winter conditions on the Eastern Front, 1943 to 1945. Inside the box there are 3 large sprues of grey styrene, and 6 smaller ones, plus a small photo etched fret. Two of the larger sprues are the ones that contain the figures themselves, two of which come with a choice between which arms and hands to use.
The other large sprue is sprue GB from previous second generation figure releases, and holds a large selection of personal gear including bread bags, canteens, flasks ammunition pouches etc. The nice thing about thee of course, is the level of detail, with pistol holsters both closed and open, and the same for the ammunition pouches, some of which are supplied with opened pockets.
The smaller sprues have all been seen before also, in previous second generation releases. There’s a small sprue containing stick grenades and hand grenades, and two more sprues with Kar 98, MP 40, Sturmgewehr 44, and a Gewehr 43. All of these have drilled out barrels and separate bolts supplied in two positions, so even if you don’t use them on these figures, then you can certainly replenish the spares box. Sprue WC contains extras for the MG42 held on another of the small sprues, in the form of ammunition drums, belts and boxes. The larger of the smaller sprues also contains personal kit, i.e. helmets, entrenching tools, gas mask cylinders, and those dinky little canteens with the removable cups! The quality of the moulding, is first rate, as we now expect from Dragon, and with that amount of highly-detailed extras thrown in, certainly represent great value for money! Each of the 4 figures is wearing a fur-lined parka, and in each case, the hood of it is supplied as a separate part, allowing for great detail that otherwise wouldn’t be possible. The front and rear of each figure’s torso is separate, allowing again for greater detail, and the arms also have pre-drilled ends to receive the separate hands. The front top of each parka is also supplied as a separate part, and the sculpted fur is very effective, and should look great once painted up. Everytime I look at one of these second generation sets, I’m still surprised at the level of detail. Even the soles of the boots have hobnails........I’m not joking, look at the photographs. The first figure is posed crouching, arm outstretched, rifle in right hand, in a similar pose to the second figure, the only difference being that the second figure is using both hands to hold the rifle. This second figure is supplied with an alternative for his right arm, which if used, allows the rifle to be raised to a slightly higher position. The third figure is lying on his front firing an MG42, with the fourth figure readying the ammunition. The small PE fret included only holds some rifle slings, and a some medals, and this os one area where I'd like to see a lot more alternatives included for things such as shoulderboards, collar tabs, etc.
ConclusionAnother great action set from Dragon, at a very reasonable price, with loads of extras thrown in....recommended. My Thanks to Dragon for the review sample For full information on all Dragon products, please see their website, Dragon Models Ltd. |
