Introduction

Lee Archer and Bill Auerbach ceratinly semmed to have started something with these books! This is the sixth in the series, each of which contains a selection of photographs of wrecked and abandoned German armour from WWII.

The book

As is usual now, the book is in the familiar softcover landscape format, with 68 pages of captioned black & white photographs, many of which are full page.

The earlier editions of the Panzerwrecks series have each been based 'loosely' around a theme, and this edition is no different, with the theme this time being field adapted variants, and to this end there are large sections showing photographs of adapted 251's including those adapted to carrying rocket launchers by both their original owners and Allied forces.

Also as usual with the previous five editions, you'll find that each of the photographs is clearly captioned so that the reader can be sure of what they're looking at, and the authors have gone to great length to ensure as far as possible that the captions are correct, consulting a number of 'experts' in the field.

As you read through the book, you'll notice that a lot of the photographs are not of 'professional' quality, and this is because most of them have been taken by amateur photographers....i.e. the guys who were there, fighting. The authors have gone to some lengths to clean up the images and present them in their best light however.

Subject-wise, the book is broken down into four main sections, 'Panzerjager & Flakpanzers of Meppen', 'Panzer Remnants on a Czech Road', 'Flammpanzer 38 in and out', and finally 'Quick Fix: Rocket Firing SPW's'.

Each section, apart from the final one also contains many more subjects as well. For example, StuG's, Panthers, Mobelwagen, 234/3, RSO, even some of the Karl-Gerat 'Loki'! In fact, that's one of the most interesting thing about this series of books...you never quite know what you're going to find between it's covers...especially since you will not have seen most, if not all of the photographs before.

Conclusion

A great addition to the series, with a hint on the cover of Panzerwrecks 7 to come. If you already have the first five, you won't be disappointed with number 6, and if you don't....then order all six now...you still won't be disappointed! Recommended!
