Title: The US Army Jeep at War
Author: Steven J Zaloga
Publisher: Concord Publications Company
ISBN: 962-361-110-2
Perhaps the best known vehicle to come out of WW2, maybe one of the most recognisable ever, the Jeep is always able to manage some surprises. I think that is true once more with this new book in the ever popular series from Concord Publications, and from an equally ever popular author, Steve Zaloga.
The first two pages are notes on the history to the Jeep which contain some useful pointers. Over 600,000 were built during WW2 and saw use all round the world. The remainder of the book conatins archive photos which Steve has provided some excellent captions for. My own feeling is that even if you have seen plenty about the Jeep before, there were lots of photos I hadn't seen before in here, and some really good inspiration for modellers.
The book is organised in the following sections -
North Africa, 1942-43
Italy 1943-4
France, June-August 1944
Combat on the German Frontier, Autumn 1944
Battle of the Bulge, Dec 44 - Jan 45
Into Germany, Feb-May 45
Generals Jeeps
and finally, the last two pages give a Pacific Jeep Potpourri.
There are a host a modelling ideas within this book, including many non standard fitting applied locally in the field. Add a few illustrations of what a mine can do to a Jeep shows how frgile they were. See the variety of extra stowage racks added to them, unusual armour additions, reels of comms cable, medical jeeps and so much more. Even the heavily weathered appearance of virtually all of them will give some great ideas.
Added to all of this, as the photos are all black and white, Steve has added the coloured artwork pages which look really good. One example is included in the album below. All in all I like this one a lot. Keep an eye out fo rit.
Thanks to Casemate Publishing, the distributors in the UK for my example, it is available now.
