...their new kit of the classic fighter
The latest in the range of 1/48 aircraft models to come from Airfix is this one, the Me Bf109 E, perhaps 'the' classic version of this famous fighter. The natural opponent of the Spitfire during the Battle of Britain, all 3 marking options provided for in this kit are from the Battle. One of them is the mount of Adolf Galland, the distinctive yellow nosed version and another is for the first example shot down over Kent during the Battle, its' pilot taken as a POW. All 3 give some nice contrasts in their colour schemes, so you might find it awkward to choose which one to go for.
The model itself is fairly simple, without any over complex elements to the construction. The engine block is moulded integrally with the fuselage halves, but with some extra detailing could be made to look rather neat. How about a crash landed example, with a Home Guard soldier standing watch, rather like the full size diorama with a reall Me 109E that you can find at Duxford? The control surfaces are all seperate parts, so can be positioned to taste, and the leading edge slats are seperate as well. Go on for a choice of clean lines, different bombs or drop tank that can be fitted, 3 different styles of spinner, and there is also a pilot figure included.
There is detail inside the cockpit and wheel wells, just enough to look OK once everything is built. Nicely moulded, subtle detailing and overall a nice, straighforward model. Not difficult to build, with enough detail for many, and the chance for more experienced modellers to add additional detailing. Still produced at a reasonable price for a model in this scale, which Airfix clearly aim to do. If you like the Me 109 as I know many do, I think you'll like this one.
Thanks to Airfix for our example, this one is in the shops now.
