...a new book from Concord Publications
Title: Panzer-Divisions in battle, 1939-45
Author: Tom Cockle
Publisher: Concord Publications
ISBN: 962-361-165-X
It is always good to see another book in the Armor at War series from Concord Publications. They are largely aimed at modellers, as Concord is of course a publishing arm of the Dragon organisation. This one does follow the standard format with a couple of pages of introductory text, followed by a series of well chosen, and well captioned photos from the war, plus a set of colour profiles in the middle of the book.
This particular volume gives an overview of German Panzer Divisions right through the war, and from assorted theatres, from Blitzkrieg right through to the final days in Germany itself. The choice of photos is once again excellent, with only a few I had seen before, and as usual there are lots of ideas for dioramas if you need some inspiration. One of my favourites is an Afrika Korps Pz IVE stopped alongside an abandonned canvas cover used by the 8th Army to disguise a tank as a truck, and the crew having a look at it. Another has new Pz IIIs, alongside an enourmous stockpile of coiled tank tracks. There are good selection showing loaded rail wagons and others giving a good view of bridging bits and pieces. Whatever your interest, early, mid or late war, there is equipment in here you will find of interest, even including captured vehicles put into German service. A shot of a UE carrier festooned with flowers would be an interesting challenge!
The colour plates give a good indication of colour, as all the photos are balck and white, something so different to the colour we see in news footage and photos today. All in all another good addition to a useful series of books.
Thanks to Casemate Publishing, the distributors in the UK for my example, it is available now.
