...one of two 1/72 M4 tractors recently released from the Hobby Boss stable
Hobby Boss 1/72 M4 High Speed Tractor (155mm/8-in/240mm)
Designed in 1942, the M4 Tractor was manufactured between March 1943 and June 1945 and by the end of production, a healthy 5,552 had been built. This swift production target was reached because the M4 was based on the same chassis and drive train used by the M3 Light Tank. As a result, the design phase was straight forward, production was easy and the vehicles entry into service was very smooth.
The version presented by Hobby Boss here was designed to tow three different howitzers; the 155mm, the 8in and 240mm. The rear part of the crew compartment had enough space for the gun crew and the box on the rear could carry a combination of the required ammunition. A rear tailgate and a crane for the heavier shells were also fitted. This 1/72 kit has just two sprues holding 27 of the parts while the lower hull and upper bodywork are separate, making a total of 29 plus a small, but busy little sheet of decals.
The build, which is produced over nine steps is obviously straight forward and is made even easier by one piece track units. For those of you who tire of this part of the construction, I think the manufacturer has missed a trick by not putting this gem of information on the outside of the box.
Once again Hobby Boss has winkled out another unusual subject which, when complete, is a mere 84.3mm long, so will not intrude too much on the display shelf!
Highly recommended and thanks very much to Creative Models for our sample which is available from www.creativemodels.co.uk.
