Vehicles of 2 Battalion REME - Equipment Support to 7th Armoured Brigade
Author: Daniel Nowak, Simon Copley-Smith, Tim Matzold
Softcover - 64 pages
Publisher: Tankograd
Series: British Special
Price: 14.95 Euros

Introduction

Arte et Marte' is the REME Corps motto. In English, it reads 'by skill and by fighting'. Field Marshal Montgomery described it as 'Keeping the Punch in the Army's Fist'. REME officers and soldiers are fully trained combat soldiers in addition to their technical skills. The Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers has responsibility for the maintenance, servicing and inspection of almost every electrical and mechanical piece of equipment within the British Army from Challenger II main battle tanks and AH64 Apache helicopters to dental tools and cooking utensils. To quote ' To keep the operationally fit equipment in the hands of troops in the most cost- effective'. This motto describes the core task of 2 Battalion REME which includes the maintenance, repair and operational effectiveness of all vehicles and machinery within the 7th Armoured Brigade.

Format

At an easy to read and view A4 format bound by a glossy cover, this book consists 64 pages with 130 colour photographs and 5 graphics, this publication also feature dual text - German and English - in both the written text and the captions. But the two languages are neatly laid out in a side-by-side manner.

Contents

As seems to be the norm with this format there is no contents page, with the book giving a written account over the first 9 pages of the Battalion responsibilities, roles and set up ending with an easy to read order of support chart.

The pages then revert to excellent colour photographs covering everything form personnel equipment and weapons up to the heavy beasts including the Challenger ARRV , Warrior and FV434 variants. As would be expected with the REME, a large portion of the book is taken by the various transport and loader vehicles which include the invaluable Bedford 4 'tonner' in its various guises the Landrover again in its various adaptations, Cranes, forklifts even the hire car Vectra the Battalion Commander has at his disposal. There is also a nice inclusion on the various vehicles the crews have to train on removing on their Recovery Camps (including the ever reliable Chieftain).

An epilogue is allowed for to the rear of the book - outlining the proposed changes to the REME equipment, including the Panther Command and Liaison Vehicle (CLV) and amendments to the Warrior as an Armoured Battle Support Vehicle.

Conclusion

A must book of reference for any kit bashers looking at doing a REME variation, would also recommend the REME Museum in the UK if possible. REME Museum
