Revell ‘STAR WARS’ kits

While we will not be making a habit of reviewing science fiction kits at Military Modelling, I do feel obliged to review this batch of Star Wars kits for Revell who were good enough to send them to us. This batch covers a broad band of Star Wars fans, which begins with myself who is ‘old school’ who loved the first three, now IV – A New Hope, V – The Empire Strikes Back & VI – Return of the Jedi!, up to the digital age with I – The Phantom Menace, II – Attack of the Clones and III – Revenge of the Sith not to mention Rogue One.

X-34 Landspeeder

IV- A New Hope

Luke Skywalker’s battered but mechanically well-maintained X-34 Landspeeder made its debut in the very first Star War’s film shown in 1977. Well that’s the first if you are old school like me as this film is now subtitled Episode IV – A New Hope.

Revell’s rendition of Skywalker’s Landspeeder is pretty cool with C3PO at the controls, Luke in the passenger seat and with enough detail to keep the Star Wars fan happy, down to the missing engine cowling on the port engine. A straightforward ten stage build for those of you who don’t like weathering the supplied decal sheet even includes ‘dirty’ sections for the nose and side pods. More experienced modellers will relish the thought of making the Landspeeder as grubby as possible!

The kit comes supplied with a stand and as this is a ‘Limited Edition’, a replica A3 film poster is also included.

This Level 3 kit also includes glue, a brush and the following paints; White (05), Black Gloss (07), Flesh Matt (35), Reddish Brown (37), Gold Metallic (94) & Purple Red (331).

Tie Fighter

A New Hope; Empire Strikes Back; Return of the Jedi & Rogue One

Another icon which we have become familiar with is this Tie Fighter which featured in all three of the original films and then again in Rogue One. A single-pilot fighter, this machine was the unforgettable symbol of the Imperial Fleet and was operated from Star Destroyers and battle stations.

Revell’s version of the Tie Fighter is big but thanks to the design of the original is not a challenging build and is completed in a dozen stages. The cockpit of the fighter is detailed both inside and out and when mounted on the supplied stand certainly looks the part. As like the Landspeeder, this is also a ‘Limited Edition’ kit and as such features the same A3 replica film poster. The decal sheet was missing from our sample but going by the instructions these mainly apply to the interior of the cockpit.

This Level 3 kit also includes glue, a brush and the following paints; Tar Black (06), Black Gloss (07), Light Blue (49), Blue Matt (56), Dust Grey (77) & Luminous Red (332).

Sith Infiltrator

Phantom Menace

The personal starship of Darth Maul, Dark Lord of the Sith, the Sith Infiltrator was a slippery ship which could travel the Universe in virtual silence.

Deceivingly, this kit only contains 22 parts but its grand A4 twelve-page instruction booklets gives this impression that this is a more complicated build than it actually is. After just eight stages your starship will be complete ready for painting, details of which are covered in the final pages, along with decal positioning. You even get a 1/257 scale Darth Maul to go with this menacing machine!

Republic Gunship

III – Revenge of the Sith; II Attack of the Clones

With its tandem cockpits, anhedral wings and an array of weapons in multiple turrets, the Republic Gunship is quite a machine. Primarily and infantry transport, the Gunship packed a huge punch thanks to its large laser cannon in the nose and huge dorsal-mounted rocket launchers.

There are 30 parts in this machine which can be built in just ten stages, the latter comprising a display stand. There is paint guidance throughout the build as well as decal positioning so no chance of getting this one wrong. A purposeful, intimidated machine, this Gunship will fill a couple hours of your time and leave you wanting to build more!

Obi-Wan’s Jedi Starfighter

III – Revenge of the Sith; II Attack of the Clones

Built specifically for the Jedi order, the Delta-7 Jedi Starfighter was a pure flying machine designed for pilots with Force-aided reflexes such as Obi-Wan Kenobi. A striking wedge-shaped design, the Starfighter also featured a R2-type unit located in the root of the port wing.

Another straightforward build from Revell which cleverly looks grander than it actually is this little Starfighter only has 21 parts and is completed in an eight stage build; again the last stage is for a stand. The last three pages of the dozen-page instruction booklet features multiple profiles of the Starfighter for colour reference and decal positioning.

There is nothing challenging about all of these Star Wars kits which are a pitched at Level 3 although I would drop that by one at least. Great value for money and great fun!
