Revell 1/32 North American P-51D Mustang
The P-51D Mustang has become a Second World War icon over the years, thanks in part to its numbers during the end of the conflict and a post-war career (albeit in a slightly different form) that extended to the Korean War. The glitz and glamour of the P-51D was aided by the number of wartime images of these highly decorated pretty machines, while other, equally impressive yet less adorned aircraft have slipped into history.
A new tool for 2017, this Revell bird can, in theory, trace its roots back to Monogram and the early 1960s although this 1/32 specimen is cut above the standard of that time. A P-51D-5NA is represented, which makes it an early production machine so it can be built with the full wartime spec. Nine main sprues hold all 158 parts which is not a high number considering how large the model is. That said the starting point, as always, is the cockpit and even if you choose to adorn it with the supplied decals rather than aftermarket PE, it will still look good. The first dozen stages of this 71 stage build are taken up by the cockpit with further detailed attention paid to the under-fuselage air intake system and undercarriage bays. At every stage you will be tempted to go hunting for the aftermarket products, however, for a build that could cost you as little as £30 the finished machine straight out of the box looks excellent thanks to a large decal sheet.
Supplied finishing options are Col. T J Christian’s 361st P-51D ‘Athelene/LouIV’ or Capt H Pascoe’s 357th FG P-51D ‘Desert Rat’. Both options feature invasion stripes indicating post-June 1944 machines.
A very nice rendition straight from the box, or the potential to produce a show winner and go mad with the aftermarket – your choice?
