Revell 1/48 British S.E.5A

As part of the many celebrations covering the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Air Force, Revell have produced a number of kits titled, ‘British Legends 1918-2018’. The Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5A, just like the Sopwith F.1 Camel (reviewed for MM4805) certainly deserves such a title and this Level 4 kit is another co-operation, this time with Eduard who first produced this version in 2017. In fact we reviewed that very kit (82131) here in May 2017 (LINK). So effectively what we have here is a Revell rebox of an Eduard kit.

Inside the box we have the same three sprues (to plastic and one glass) as per No.8231 but this kit has Revell instructions and decals rather than Eduard. Unlike the Eduard kit, there is no PE and while the 50 stage build has many similarities to Eduards, Revell have stamped their mark on this. For a relatively small subject, this is quite a complex build and the cockpit construction alone explains why this has got over 100 parts. As always the aftermarket options are out there for those of you who like super detail including PE from Roden and Eduard and guns, also from Eduard which were also reviewed here in October 2017 (LINK).

The rigging on a S.E.5A is not too traumatic by First World War standards and although not supplied, a page is dedicated to getting it right. At the rear of the instructions is a pair of finishing options, one aircraft from 24 Squadron at Cappy in September 1918 (the box art) and another with 60 Squadron at Inchy in November 1918. The decals are bang up to date printed by Revell in 2018.

This is a nice kit and a timely co-operation with Eduard will hopefully yield more combinations in the future. Thanks to Revell for sending Military Modelling this kit for review. Revell model kits are available from all good toy and model retailers. For details visit www.revell.de/en.
