TAKOM 1/35 T29E3 US Heavy Tank

The colossal T29 Heavy Tank was created on the back of the arms race between the US and Germany in response to latter’s fielding of the near 70ton King Tiger and Jagdtiger tanks in 1944. However, the war had ended by the time the T29 was ready, resulting in the cancellation of any potential production. The US Army was left with a few prototype machines, including the T29E3 which were extensively trialled during the immediate post-war period. The T29E3 used a large number of components from the M26 Pershing including a lengthened version of the hull and the same eight roadwheels per side running on extended T26E1 tracks (T80E3 tracks). Powered by a 770hp Ford GAC V-12 engine, the T29E3s appearance was dominated by its huge turret which accommodated four of the five (possibly six) man crew. Main armament was a 105mm T5E1 gun capable of firing a 39lb AP round at 3,000 FPS and armour on the turret alone was seven inches thick at the front.

As the real thing was almost 38ft long you can imagine that this beast from TAKOM is very impressive in 1/35 scale. An initial release for 2017, this may be a large model but it is certainly not daunting to build. Even the construction of the tracks is made much easier thanks to the now near standard trend of supplying a jig, which makes life so much easier. The kit includes the option of two types of mantlets, a pair of metal tow cables and a small decal sheet. You do get a lot of tank for the money but personally I think a PE sheet would not have gone a miss for the £56.99 price. This is still a recommended kit for those who like really big tanks!
