This new 1/35 resin conversion set marks the return of Castoff. Made by Terry Beale, Castoff were on the scene a few years ago and then went quiet for a while. Now with some time to get back to his range, Terry has his old range available again, and has added this new conversion, with the uparmoured LEP (Life Extension Programme) applied to the British Army Scimitar.
Designed to go with the AFV Club 1/35 kit, this has a new upper hull and turret, to fit with the lower hull and running gear of the AFV Club kit. Add to this are new stowage boxes, new lights and other details which came with a change from the original petrol engine to a diesel alternative. The other difference which adds to the LEP changes, is the addition of up-armouring with a series of mesh armour panels around the hull, to add another level of protection to the aluminium armour of the hull itself. These used for some time, and in recent years, from experience of places such as Iraq, they are now adding bar armour as well as a protection against RPGs. None of that yet though, this one has the metal mesh panels of the intermediate stage. Considering how fine these are for casting in resin, Terry has done a very neat job of it. Assembly instructions are provided, with explosed diagrams to help illustrate the sequence. Just some basic cleaning up to do on the castings, removing mould feeds, and then assemble with the main kit. A good conversion to add an update to the basic Scimitar kit from AFV Club of course, and effectively provides two different upgrades, the LEP and then the additional armour panels.
