Thanks to Warlord Games for supplying this little gem and to Richard Dyer for reviewing it!
Warlord 1/56 Puma, Sd.Kfz 234/2 Armoured Car
Here we have a plastic kit of the Puma eight-wheeled armoured car in 1/56 (28mm) scale. Warlord Games have teamed up with scale model manufacture Italeri to produce this model. While primarily intended for the wargamer to build and use in conjunction with the ‘Bolt Action’ (www.boltaction.com) World War II game system, this kit would equally be at home on the scale modeler’s workbench or collector’s cabinet.
The kit is designed and presented more in the manner of a conventional scale model, but without a massively high parts count. I counted 81 separate parts in total, which includes a crew figure. The instructions show eleven separate stages of construction illustrated with CAD type diagrams printed on a single A5 sheet of paper. The kit parts are moulded in a dark grey plastic shared over two sprues. Moulding is flash free and exhibits some crisp if slightly simplified detail. There are some quite small components to be manipulated, but with care there’s nothing too arduous for the less experienced to cope with.
The muzzle brake of the main gun is neatly moulded open, which saves a job. The main gun can be modelled to elevate and depress and the turret can rotate. The two hatches on the turret can each be modelled in the open or closed position and as already noted there is a crew/commander figure that can be added to the model, though strangely he is not shown in the instructions. If not used with this vehicle he makes a useful addition to the spares box. A decal sheet is provided with the kit containing a choice of tactical and divisional markings, along with two styles of Balkenkreuz. Some turret numbers are also provided in black with a white outline. While the carrier film is perhaps a little on the thick side, print quality and colour registration is very good. As an aside the same model is also available re-boxed under the Italeri banner (item No. 15653), but with a different decal sheet.
Recommended to the wargamer with and interest in mid to late World War II scenarios, and also to the novice/younger modeller as a rewording challenge. With thanks to Jamie at Warlord Games for providing us with our review sample.
