Zvezda 1/72 Jagdpanther – German Tank Destroyer

Based on a Panther tank chassis, the Sd.Kfz.173 Jagdpanther (‘Hunting Panther’) was a 45.5 ton tank destroyer, protected by armour up to 100mm thick and armed with 8.8cm Pak 43/3 or 43/4 L/71 gun; the latter being the same weapon mounted in a Tiger II. Luckily for the Allies, production was restricted to 415, mainly thanks to the steadily deteriorating German infrastructure the country was suffering at the time.

A new tool from Zvezda, this 1/72 version of this formidably machine is actually a snap fit kit; so, no glue required. The box art gives a good indication to what camouflage you should be looking at and the rear of the box displays images of the kit finished, from various angles, but unpainted. Inside there are three main sprues, one of them holding two complete tracks, the main lower hull of the Jagdpanther, a small decal sheet and an A4 two-page instruction leaflet. The detail of the major components, such as the upper hull is excellent, especially the rear deck above the 690hp Maybach engine (not included!). From experience, Zvezda snap fit kits go together extremely well and even though the glue will be sat closely by on the edge of the cutting mat, the odds of you using it are slim.

Personally, I think these kits from Zvezda will appeal more to the wargamer, the novice or for someone who needs a break from a kit that is taking forever to finish! This Jagdpanther is a ‘completer-finisher!’

A great kit and for less than £9, you can’t go wrong! Special thanks to The Hobby Company who are the UK distributor for this kit. www.hobbyco.net.
