How to Install Marine Vinyl Flooring
When it comes to renovating or rebuilding a marine vessel, ensuring the durability and safety of the floor is crucial. Marine vinyl flooring is an excellent choice, providing resistance to moisture, chemicals, and UV exposure. To achieve a professional-looking result, installing marine vinyl flooring requires attention to detail, patience, and a series of steps. In this article, we’ll take you through a comprehensive guide on how to install marine vinyl flooring, including tools, preparation, and final touches.
Tools Required
Before beginning the installation process, it’s essential to have the right tools. Gather the following essentials:
• Floor preparation: Drill, grout scraper, sanding block
• Flooring preparation: Utility knife, measuring tape, level
• Laminating material: Marine-grade sealant, masking tape, roller
• Applicator or installer spatula (specific for marine vinyl)
• Underlayment (optional, but recommended)
Floor Preparation
Prior to applying the marine vinyl flooring, ensure the substrate (plywood or plywood- veneered substrates) meets the required specifications:
Substrate Requirements
- Dimensions: At least 20% thicker than the specified vinyl roll dimension
- Surface preparation:
- Cleanliness: Thoroughly wash with mild soap and water, allowing time to dry completely
- Fill imperfections with a flexible caulk material
- Sand thoroughly to create a smooth surface (using an aggressive sanding block to expose any filled areas)
- Edge preparation:
- Remove old glue and oils
- Inspect and prepare the seam for any seams (caulk joints if necessary)
- Remove dust: Vacuum thoroughly using a powerful vacuum with HEPA filters
Measure and Prepare the Substrate
Once the floor is prepared:
- Measure the perimeter: Identify and mark each wall, taking into account for expansion allowances (approximately 1.5mm expansion joints). This is essential to achieve a snug, wrinkle-free fit.
- Plan the design pattern: Coordinate the seam arrangement according to the supplier’s instructions
- Divide the floor area: Subdivided into smaller sections based on the floor size
Cut the Vinyl Panels
Before laminating and applying the vinyl flooring panels:
- Measure and mark each section: Measure from center point: Measure along each panel marked on the subfloor while ensuring precise parallel alignment on both lengthwise and laterally, cutting through excess vinyl excess.
Remove the Masking
While the flooring installation begins,
- Removing the centerline marks: Cut 1-inch gaps, usually 4-inch width expansion joints at either end using a straight blade (approx. 1000, 1400 series cutter)
- Prepare underlayment material : Apply an industrial-strength adhesive and peel backing immediately before cutting 3-to-6 mil. PE foam padding on each exposed edge and spread on underside of rolled adhesive strips in seams for seams
Vinyl Film Installation and Roll Adhesives Strips Application in Seams and Floor Corners
- After cleaning subfloor again by wet methods, Apply thin coat spread evenly throughout on exposed film edges at subfloor:
• Marine vinyl for dry-docking wet areas or full-water-borne operation or exposed weather conditions for use as cabin or pilothouse decks - On areas receiving minor pedestrian use inside cabins
- Application of pressure-treated adhesion promoter:
§ Apply it immediately- Keep surfaces with a roller
- Application of pressure-treated adhesion promoter:
- Apply by
Rolling
Application and use of underlaym:ent of thin sandpaper layer before adh:hes:-taining
- Apply by

- On roll
Note: Never remove any tapes or sheets unless by slow-motion movements towards the
Roll or Adhesive sheets that do cover the material can only.
