The First Revolver: Unlocking the Secrets of Pistol History
The revolver is a type of handgun that has been a staple in history for centuries. With its rotating cylinder and firing pin, it has evolved significantly over the years to become one of the most common and iconic firearms. So, what was the first revolver? That’s a question that many firearms enthusiasts and historians love to debate.
Understanding the Early Years of Pistols
Before we explore the first revolver, let’s take a brief look at the early history of pistols. The first modern pistol is credited to Giovanni Battista D’ozio, an Italian craftsmen, who created the world’s first modern flintlock pistol in the mid-16th century (1550) [1]. This pistol marked the beginning of the evolutionary journey of firearms, moving away from the earlier types of guns, such as matchlocks and wheel-locks.
The Etruscan Revolvers
Fast-forward to around 300 BCE [2], when Etruscan gold and bronze artifacts (Figure 1) with revolver-like mechanisms were found in Italy. These objects, known as "bronzetti," are remarkably similar to modern revolvers, with rotating cylinders, firing pins, and shells. While not necessarily working firearms, these artifacts can be considered precursors to the modern revolver.

Lorenzo’s Revolving Pistol
Now, if we fast-forward to more recent times, we’ll find that the Lorenzo’s Revolving Pistol (Figure 2) is often credited with being the first functional revolver. Lorenzo Azzopardi’s (1799) design, patented in Britain in 1818, featured a cylinder with up to six chambers, where each chamber contained a live cartridge. This innovative concept allowed for rapid firing with minimal reloading, making the revolver a game-changer in the world of hand-to-hand combat.

Other Revolutionary Designs
While Lorenzo Azzopardi’s revolvers are considered some of the earliest functional revolvers, other inventors had similar ideas around the same time. Samuel Colt, an American firearms manufacturer, developed his version of the revolver in 1836, which features a single-action lock and a ring trigger. Colt’s design became widely popular in the United States and inspired many other manufacturers to experiment with revolver designs.
In 1851, German gunsmith Eliusabeth Schütze-Schmidt developed the first revolving rifle (Figure 3) with a cylinder that rotates to align the chamber and firing pin with the rifled barrel. This marked a significant innovation in handheld artillery, allowing for more compact designs and increased firepower.

Conclusion
The discovery of the first revolver dates back to ancient times in Italy, with the development of Etruscan revolvers. Later in history, innovators such as Lorenzo Azzopardi, Samuel Colt, and Elisabeth Schütze-Schmidt would go on to create further improvements and refinements.
In conclusion, while multiple designs and prototypes have shared precariously over history’s record, the first functional revolver is credibly attributed to Lorenzo Azzopardi’s Revolving Pistol in 1818.
