The United States Navy offers a wide range of job opportunities for naval aviation pilots. As an air warrior, you will fly top-of-the-line military aircraft, conducting military operations and providing air support for land and sea based troops.
What Types of Aircraft Fly in the Navy?
The Navy has a variety of aircraft for naval pilots to fly, depending on the mission requirements:

What Type of Mission Do Navy Pilots Have?
The primary mission of a Naval Aviator includes:
- Air superiority: Controlling the airspace against hostile aircraft
- Assault and strikes: Attack enemy ground or shipboard targets
- Suppression of Enemy Air Defense (SEAD): Disable enemy air defenses
- ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance): Provide critical information about the situation on the battlefield
To become a part of naval aviation, officers attend one of the service academies or commission via a National Direct Commission program after obtaining a bachelor’s degree or through the Junior Military Officers program.
Air Warriors: The Physical Demands
As naval aviation is a physically and mentally demanding profession, candidates undergo rigorous training programs and periodic physical evaluations .
- Physical Strength requires a minimum standard push-ups (35 female and 42 male),
- Sit-ups and squats are another required skill
- Vision corrected in the 20-75 range (dial frame glasses allowed; glasses need to be issued after consultation with an opthalmologist)
