Meet the Essential Qualifications
Before outlining the steps to become an officer in the Air National Guard, it’s important to meet the essential requirements:
- Age Requirements: You must be 17 years old to the 35 years old while applying for officer training (Warrant Officer : 18 to 28 years old).
- Citizenship: You must be a legal U.S. citizen of the United States, with no alien registration papers.
- Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institutions, with a minimum aggregate GPA of 2.45 (for Academy applicants – 3.0 cum laude).
Three Paths to Becoming a Commissioned Officer
there are three ways to gain a commission in the United States Air National Guard; through:
1.) The Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs
- Take the College Board Service Academy Assessment (and prepare for it)
- Get a scholarship (full or academic)
- Study hard for the Assessment (and be prepared physically and mentally)
- Successfully complete the four-year university program at the Air Force Academy
- Coursework includes: Military orientation, leadership development, languages, and cultural studies
2.) Officer School at Maxwell AFB: Air National Guard Officer and Warrant Officer Training:
- Widespread opportunities: No Air Force Academy or college, no problem!
- Direct commissioning program: Hire for your experience, but must be a sworn member of the Air Nation Guard with at most 10 years of membership
- Attend Officer Candidates School (OCS at Maxwell AFB, AZ)
- 19 weeks of rigorous training under the guidance of experienced Senior Enlisted Advisors
3.) Airforce ROTC:
