About VTM-4 Honda Pilot
The Honda Pilot is a mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) manufactured by Honda from 2002 to the present day. One of its distinctive features is its Variable Torque Management All-Wheel Drive (VTM-4) system, which provides improved traction and handling on various driving surfaces.
About VTM-4 Mode
In normal driving conditions, VTM-4 is defaulted to be in 2WD mode, which transmits the engine’s torque to the front wheels exclusively. However, pressing the VTM-4 button enables the system to send a portion of torque to the rear wheels depending on road conditions and input from various sensors.
How to Turn On VTM-4 on Honda Pilot:
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Make sure the Vehicle is in Forward Gear: The VTM-4 system only function when the vehicle is moving forward and in gear.
- Press and Hold the VTM-4 Button: Locate the VTM-4 switch on your center console dashboard. It’s usually found near the gearshift level. Press and hold the VTM-4 button with your thumb.
- Wait for the Green Light: Inside the driver’s instrument panel, the VTM-4 green light will gradually illuminate indicating that the VTM-4 system has engaged and is sending additional torque to the rear wheels.
- Gradual VTM-4 Engagement: As you gently accelerate from a standstill, the VTM-4 system will dynamically adjust and send more or less torque to the rear wheels, depending on actual driving conditions.
<Table 1: Example of Honda Pilot VTM-4 Engagement>
| 100% FF | 00% DR | Variable Torque
-----------------------------------------------
Normal Terrain | → | | ≤ 65% FF <= 35% DR
Towing or Hilly Terrain | →→ | →→ | ≤ 85% FF ≤ 15% DR
Traversing Poor Terrain | → → | →— | ≥ 90% FF ≤ 10% DR
Racing/Merging/Grip Loss | → || ≥ 95% RR ≤ 5% FR (if front wheels lose grip)
Factors Affecting VTM-4 Response:
In addition to the above guide, understanding the following aspects will enable you to better employ the VTM-4 system to your advantage in various scenarios:
• Battery Voltage : A weak battery may slow down the activation of the VTM-4 system.
• Traction Control System Settings: You can adjust settings to alter the sensitivity to wheel-spin detection and braking intervention (see your owner’s manual for more information)
• Clearance: Always ensure good clearance from ground and low-hanging debris to permit proper VTM-4 system operation, especially for taller vehicles and when using optional accessories.
