The First NERF Gun: Reyn Guyer and Parker Brothers
Reynold "Reyn" Guyer, an American design engineer and entrepreneur, is widely credited as the inventor of the first NERF gun in the 1960s. As a proud alumnus of Bradley University (then Peoria YMCA School), Guyer honed his skills as an engineer while working at various companies in the early days of toy development. This experience was the springboard for Guyer’s foray into the world of Nerf guns.
Initially, NERF stood for ‘Non-Expanding Rubber Fleselage’, with Guyer collaborating with his wife, Diane, and two other pioneers, Pete Werner and Fred Lesser. The team wanted to create a toy that was fun, safe, and wouldn’t cause much noise – thus, foam-based darts were the solution! With the foundation of the idea, Park Bros., (later become Parker Brothers), stepped in as the producers, and voilà, the legendary NERF gun prototype was born!
