How do You Load a Grease Gun?

Loading a grease gun is a vital task that requires attention to detail to ensure proper function and maintain the longevity of your grease gun. In this article, we will explore the step-by-step guide on how to load a grease gun, highlighting significant content and providing visual assistance to make the process as straightforward as possible.

Preparation for Loading

Before loading your grease gun, ensure you have gathered the necessary materials:

• A grease gun
Grease cartridge(s) (compatible with the specific gun model)
• Gloves (optional, for hygienic purposes or working with greases that irritate skin)
• Workshop mat or a clean working surface

Tightening the Gun Bolt

Initially, locate the gun bolt (bolded highlighted part) on the loading chamber of your grease gun. The gun bolt will likely be located at the front or top of the grease gun, depending on the model. Turn Counter-Clockwise (Reverse) to loosen and expose the loading chamber (picture reference).

Removing the Old O-Ring (If Any)

Old o-rings can build up residue and affect loading accuracy. If you previously had grease in the tube or notice any residue sticking, gently remove the previous o-ring:

  • Locate the o-ring seating area
  • With your fingers or gloved hands, carefully pop off the o-ring CCW (Counter-clockwise)

Inserting the O-Ring (New for Load)

For a new load, you want a clean o-ring fit:

  • Take a replacement o-ring (usually the included spare) and hand slide it onto the needle-end of the grease dispenser until it reaches the outer seating area
  • With the o-ring in Correct Position, ensure alignment

Loading a Cartridge

Place the matching-compatible grease cartridge between your thumb and index fingers Parallel to your wrist, with the retaining tab facing away from the tube:

  • Hold your palm flat, with one thumb and index finger inserted and the other fingers slightly released
  • Gently push the cartridge slowly downwards into the loading tube (about 1 – 2 inches – for some models, specific marks on the tube give clues on the correct extent
  • Stop only once the cartridge edges come in contact with or start to slide into view when viewed from the load aperture
  • Stop movement and ensure an almost complete fit

Further Installing the Cartridge:

To advance and secure the cartridge ensure both:
Hand twist the cartridge around the axis within *the loading tube body about 1½ revolutions to ensure proper thread
Hand insert, or use a greasy tool, to nudge the cartridge past initial seating (by slightly pressing the cartridge bottom area, CCW), to ensure proper chamber coupling
Light Grip** the cartridge housing during the process

Briefly Check the Cartridge Position: A quick glance through viewport or, better yet, careful examination of outer sealing ring (if marked “Seal Index mark”) should suffice as an indicator of partial proper seating.

Last Securing the cartridge & Reassembling Steps:

As long as the cartridge engages seamlessly and the seal becomes consistent with the gun internal channel, proceed with confidence and follow these steps again.
Hand twist the cartridge around it, and CCW with light grip using, to secure the load while you *re-enter o-ring seating area

Turn the gunbolt CLOCKWISE (Forward-Mainly) to make your o-ring seating (proper seating) and thus achieve complete cartridge seated state.

PRACTICAL TIP**

To eliminate the risk of future potential problems, **always clean the gun and cartridge properly during loading**.

Converting to a new task should now be straightforward considering loading the grease gun. Remember to follow the manufacturer-suggestions and guidelines for their specified products.
