What happens in Captain America: Civil War?
Captain America: Civil War is the 13th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the third installment in the Captain America series. Released in 2016, the movie follows the fractious relationship between the Avengers as they decide whether to sign the Sokovia Accords, a set of regulations and oversight measures designed to make the team more accountable to international authorities.
The Pre-Credits Scene
Before the main story begins, the movie opens with a tantalizing pre-credits sequence that sets the tone for the rest of the story. In Lagos, Sokovia, the Avenger Black Widow ( Scarlett Johansson) is undertaking a mission to destroy abandoned weapons and technology. Unexpectedly, the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), who has been working behind the scenes, attacks Lagos, causing chaos and resulting in the deaths of both innocent civilians and Wakandans. This event inadvertently leads to the introduction of the Sokovia Accords.
The Team Divides
The central conflict of the movie revolves around the Sokovia Accords, which would severely limit the Avengers’ activities and require them to disclose their missions to the United Nations. Captain America (Chris Evans) argues that the Accords violate the Avengers’ fundamental reason for existing: to defend the world without government meddling. Iron Man / Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), once a strong advocate for civil liberties, has changed his stance and believes that strict regulations are necessary to control the team’s actions after the events in Sokovia.
The Broader Conflict
As opinions divide, the Avengers engage in a series of squabbles and debates on the matter. Team Iron Man, comprising the likes of Iron Man (Tony Stark), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Spider-Man (Tom Holland), and Vision (Paul Bettany); and Team Captain America, consisting of Captain America, Black Widow, Okoye (Danai Gurira), Thunderbolt Ross (William Hurt), and Winter Soldier, each with their convictions. The rift between both teams grows, leading to a series of shocking confrontations.
- The Battle in Romania: The conflict escalates when Team Iron Man and Team Captain America clash in Vormir, Romania.
- The Airport Scuffle: The tension boiled over at the Leipzig-Gohlis Airport, an event that marked one of the most intense MCU battles.
- The Confrontation of the Winter Soldier: At the end of the 2014 film, the Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Black Widow, and their allies attempted to apprehend the Winter Soldier. Cap, however, chose his friend over the Accords, leading to the demise of the Winter Soldier when he was shot by Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).
The Twist: The True Enemy Is Revealed
Just before the final confrontation, revelations about the true enemy shine a light on the mystery. Helmut Zemo, a former associate of the Winter Soldier with a personal vendetta after the events in Sokovia, is the person responsible for the attacks orchestrated by the Winter Soldier against the Avengers. Zemo’s ultimate goal is vengeance against the Avengers for taking away his family, all of whom were killed except for his daughter, a victim of the Winter Soldier’s actions.
